Chapter 13

Mom is already in bed asleep, so I set my alarm for the morning.

As soon as I wake up, I check my phone. . . . Still nothing from Gemma. I send her another text but don’t get a response. What is going on? This isn’t like her to ignore me.

I keep my phone nearby as I make pancakes for breakfast. Mom is ready to go, her suitcase is packed and sitting by the front door. I think she’s in a hurry.

I tell her about the funeral and the graveside service while we eat, but I leave out the stuff about Bellany’s missing body. I’d rather not bring that up right now, not until I find out from Gemma what’s going on.

After we eat, Mom has me drive her to the airport in Raleigh, which is about a forty-five minute drive. Usually she drives herself and leaves her car in long term parking, but today she asked if I would take her. I’m not sure why. Does she sense that I’m hiding something from her?

As we approach the exit on the freeway, she asks me about Mr. Silverfield, or Brad as she calls him. “So how was Brad?”

“He held himself together quite well actually.” I wonder if that’s because he knows his daughter really isn’t dead.

“Oh good. . . . Did he like the plant I sent?”

I bite my lip and hesitate. Last night, I set the plant on some random person’s car at the gas station and left it there. I didn’t want Mom to see it and be disappointed because I didn’t give it to him. “Yeah, I think so,” I lie. “He was just really busy and distracted.”

“Do you think I should have gone to the funeral?” she asks, and I can tell this is really bothering her. Maybe that’s why she wanted me to drive her to the airport.

Mr. Silverfield knew that Mom didn’t like Bellany -- no doubt about it. I can’t quote the exact words Mom had said to him, but she said something like, We are done! Finished! And in case you don’t know why, I’ll tell you. It’s because of your daughter. She is the most vicious, mean, and conniving person I have ever met. Harsh, but true.

“I think you made the right decision not to go. There were so many people there anyway, Mr. Silverfield might not even realize you weren’t there.”

I pull the Bronco over to the side of the road and help Mom get her luggage out of the back. We say our goodbyes, then she heads into the airport. As I drive back towards the freeway, I pick up my phone and call Gemma. She better answer!

“Hello,” she says, sounding all cheerful.

“Gemma, what did Bridger say? You never called me back.” There’s a chomping and crunching sound. Is she eating?

“I would have called you, but I went over to his house.” She chomps again. “He wanted to show me the urn with Bellany’s ashes inside. He insisted.
